Through accelerating the deployment of large-scale scientific facility clusters, strengthening research institution platforms, and speeding up the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, Songshan Lake has gradually built a comprehensive innovation ecosystem covering the entire chain, all elements, and the entireprocess.
(1) Major Scientific and Technological Infrastructure
1. China Spallation Neutron Source
As China’s first and the world’s fourth pulsed spallation neutron source, it provides the most advanced neutron scattering research platform for cutting-edge research and national major needs in material science, physics, life sciences, and other fields. It serves as a 'super microscope' for studying the microscopic structure of matter. To date, thousands of user experiments have been completed, generating a number of significant original achievements and yielding abundant cross-disciplinary technological transformation results.
2. Advanced Attosecond Laser Facility
A major national scientific and technological infrastructure and the first advanced attosecond laser facility in Asia, it will establish a comprehensive ultrafast electron dynamics research facility with attosecond temporal resolution and high spatiotemporal coherence characteristics. It will provide key technological support for China's cutting-edge basic research in material science and is praised as an 'ultrafast camera' for capturing electron motion.
3. Southern Light Source Research and Testing Platform
This project provides fundamental guarantees and important support for the pre-research of key technologies, engineering construction, and open operation of the future Southern Advanced Light Source. It also offers technical support for the deployment of more large-scale scientific facilities and serves as an important technical reserve platform for the construction of China’s next-generation advanced light source.
(2) Core Scientific Research Institutes
1. Dongguan Institute of Materials Science and Technology, CAS
A research institute directly under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, it is structured around three pillars: cutting-edge science in new materials, major industrial needs, and transformative R&D paradigms. The institute has established 10 major research divisions, including the Frontiers and Interdisciplinary Science Research Division, as well as four key support platforms such as the Material Preparation and Characterization Laboratory, making it a strategic scientific and technological force in the field of new materials in Dongguan.
2. Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory
One of the first four provincial laboratories initiated for construction in Guangdong Province, it aims to explore and establish a full-chain innovation system encompassing“frontier basic research-applied basic research-industrial technology research-industrial transformation.”It is positioned to become a southern basefor new materials research and development with international influence, an important component of national materials science research, and a new window for cross-border openness in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao.
(3) New R&D Institutions and Incubation Carriers
Currently, Songshan Lake hosts 18 provincial-level new R&D institutions, 15 national-level incubators and 47 technology business incubators. The park provides key support for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, the incubation of technology enterprises, and the gathering of high-end talent, focusing on the incubation and cultivation of enterprises within its new R&D institutions.Efforts are alsomade to promote project settlement, enhance the quality and efficiency of new R&D institutions, and form an incubation system covering the entire growth cycle of enterprises.
